An inherited secret. An ancient rival. A magical legacy.

Briana turned her back on her Zyne witch heritage to chase her dream career abroad. But when a tragic accident calls her back to her small town island roots, a spell cast in her grandmother’s dying moments opens her to Oracle powers she’s spent her whole life avoiding. Now, an enemy of old has surfaced, hungry for vengeance . . . and Bri’s soul. Unprepared and untrained, she must harness the magic buried deep within her to defeat the demon of her past and save the man she loves.

I received a copy of this audiobook from Audiobookworm Tours
in exchange for my honest review. The gifting of this book

in no way influenced my review and all opinions are entirely my own.

Urban fantasy is a very new genre to me. And especially witches. Despite that, I was blown away at how thoroughly I was pulled into the storyline.

nph mind blown

Briana, Astrid an Kean were so well written that I really felt like I got to know them. I would have liked to see more of Astrid, though I am aware the book was meant to revolve around Briana and Kean. It always seemed like Astrid just faded into the background and I really enjoyed her character. She is one of those characters that I would love to see a spin-off for.

I liked Briana. Even though she seems like she’s losing her mind in the beginning, I liked how strong she got as the story went on. Her story arc was developed perfectly so that you felt for her in the beginning but were also kinda proud to see how she grew. And her and Kean’s relationship, as little of the book as it encompassed, was beautiful. *thumbs through thesaurus for better adjectives because these just aren’t cutting it*

The plot moved perfectly in this book. I also enjoyed the added mystery of trying to figure out who the killer / soul eater demon really is. He / It talks about the “host” right away so I spent the entire book guessing who it was. And when the poor sap was finally revealed, I was almost sobbing “no, no, no” along with Briana.

no no no

This book worked perfectly with my obsessive need to speed up the audio. And it was a good thing, too, because it runs just shy of 12 hours!

I loved the emotion Daniela Acitelli put into her narration. Especially when it came to characters like Briana’s grandmother, Ce-Ce.

You have to see. Her grandmother’s face was so frightened and sad, pleading with her.

The way she narrated it is stuck with me. That’s the type of narration I enjoy – the kind that isn’t so easily forgotten. She gave extreme personality to the characters, making them come alive for me, even beyond Gwen Mitchell’s creation.

  2. I love Rain of Ash! I read it on kindle unlimited and was completely captivated by the story!
Astrid was the stand out for me too, and she needs her own series!
You should definitely try out her other Zyne world book To Tame a Wild Heart (also available on KU). Corvin is the ultimate swoon.
