Today, we are happy to welcome author Shelley Pierce to the Ginger Mom! Crystal and I recently had the opportunity to review Shelley’s book, The Wish I Wished Last Night and will be sharing our review of that with you tomorrow (see? Now you have a reason to come back! Tricky me *wink*)
Shelley, welcome and thank you for talking with us today!
Q1 – What made you want to become an author? Or is this something you’ve always wanted to do?
I have always enjoyed writing and have aspired to become an author as far back as I can remember. I was almost 40 when I finally decided to get serious about the path towards publication.
Q2 – What is your favorite part of being an author?
My favorite part of being an author is hearing how something I wrote impacted a life or even just made a small difference in someone’s day.
Q3 – What made you choose the middle grade / young adult genre to write in?
I have worked with kids for more than 30 years. While I love all ages, my favorite would be 4-6 graders. I have a desire to provide fun reading that will make them laugh but also open their imaginations and give them hope for a better tomorrow.
Q4 – Is there a message you are trying to convey with your writing or do you write just for fun?
I hope I convey “never give up”. No matter how dark today may seem, it’s going to be okay. There is always hope. My faith is central to everything I do. And it’s faith in God that gives me hope.
Q5 – What inspired you to start writing?
What inspired me? I began writing curriculum for Lifeway Kids 14 years ago. It was the idea of making a difference in lives that inspired me then. Knowing the power of words to build up or tear down, I am still inspired with the idea of building up.
Q6 – When do you find yourself writing most (morning, evening, etc.)? How about a specific writing spot or are you more of a writing nomad?
I enjoy writing early in the morning, before the press of the day sets in. I have 3 favorite spots to write – my office, the dining room table, and a writing nook created for me by my son (so I can write and watch it snow). Snow definitely inspires me 🙂
Q7 – Last but not least, what is ONE piece of advice you would give to aspiring authors or those just starting out?
Just one? I guess I’ll have to repeat NEVER GIVE UP.
Shelley, thanks so much for being with us today! We look forward to sharing our review of The Wish I Wished Last Night with everyone tomorrow 🙂
