I read this book back in 2013, after falling in love with the dystopian genre. I gave it a 3 star review only moments after reading the last page, my mind very confused. There are no direct spoilers in this review but I do describe my feelings about the ending. That being said, if you still wish to continue, here is my review . . .
I finished this book with a strong sense of confusion. Confusion because I’m really not sure how I feel about the book. At the beginning, I wasn’t sure I would like it. Then the middle comes and I started getting sucked into the story and the characters and I really liked it. Then the ending. Ooh, that ending. One phrase comes to mind to describe how Veronica Roth decided to end this book . . . “How dare you?”. Really? Of all the possible endings, she had to choose that one! There are parts of it (well, one part of it) that I agree with. The other parts . . . really?! Of all the endings! I have to give this a 3 star rating because I really don’t know. I don’t know if I liked it or didn’t like it. As for the sequel, I’m really unsure whether or not I even want to read it. Part of me does because of that curiosity to find out what happens to Tris and everyone else. But after the first book . . . really?! I can’t believe the book ended the way it did.
I guess I have to say that Veronica Roth did a great job because I got sucked into the story and she got a very strong reaction out of me with that ending. Do I agree with her choice of how to end the book? Not so sure about that. But she did a great job as an author. She sucked me in and did not let go until the book was finished. Congratulations, Veronica. Well played. But the ending . . . really?!
2017 Disclaimer – I will most likely be revisiting this book and doing a Round 2 Review (basically, a second chance for a better review), as I have decided to keep going and finish out the series. We’ll see what happens . . .
Want to buy it on Amazon and decide for yourself? Here you go – I hope your review is more favorable than my own. Happy reading!
